Scenic lookouts

Famous for its mountainous and rugged scenery a million years in the making, the Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park has a number of spectacular scenic lookouts. Some are easily reached by car, some an easy walk, and others will lead you down spectacular sandstone ridges and between unusual rock formations to behold the awe-inspiring vistas.

By car

Check out some of the best lookouts accessible by car, such as Boroka, Reed and Mount William.

Mount William
At 1,167 metres, Mount William is the highest point in the park and provides great 360-degree views of mountain ranges and open plains. Take the steep walk to reach the summit from Grampians Dunkeld Tourist Road, South East Grampians.

Boroka Lookout
Drive up Mt Difficult Road to one of the best lookouts in the Grampians. Take the very short walk from the carpark to the lookout platform and revel in 180-degree views of Western Victoria, looking out over Halls Gap and Lake Bellfield. Picnic tables and toilets are available.

Reeds Lookout and The Balconies
Drive on up Mt Victory Road to get to the Reeds Lookout car park and then take the ten-minute walk to the summit for views of Victoria Valley, Lake Wartook, and the Serra, Victoria and Mount Difficult ranges.

Press on for another easy two kilometres, through rocky outcrops and stringybark forest, to arrive at The Balconies. The perfect location for misty morning and autumnal sunsets, the lookout offers panoramic views of Victoria Range, Lake Wartook and Mount Difficult.

The Bluff at Mount Arapiles
Drive to the top of Mount Arapiles-Tooan State Park for spectacular views over the Wimmera Plains from the rugged sandstone peak of Mount Arapiles. Take the Centenary Park Road off the Wimmera Highway.

On foot

Pack your camera and follow your feet along designated walking trails to well-known lookouts at mounts Sturgeon, Abrupt and Stapylton, Boronia Peak, and The Pinnacle.

The Pinnacle
Make your way to the popular Pinnacle Lookout one of two ways. Choose the easy to medium walk from Sundial Carpark or challenge yourself on a hike through the Grand Canyon from Wonderland Carpark. Once at the top, be rewarded with stunning views of Halls Gap and the Grampians' many peaks. 

Mount Abrupt
Allow three hours (return) to walk this 6.5km track to the summit and then take in spectacular views of the Serra Range and Dunkeld. Look out for kestrels, falcons and wedge-tailed eagles as you go. The track is steep so is best suited to experienced bush walkers.

Mount Sturgeon
Energetic walkers will love this challenge, which takes in water crossings, open woodland and rocky terrain. Once at the summit, revel in panoramic views of the surrounding ranges and volcanic plains, and the town of Dunkeld.

Grampians Peaks Trail
Looking for a bigger challenge? Set aside a few days for this spectacular multi-day walk, which will eventually become a 12-day hiking adventure. Walk from Halls Gap to Borough Huts and back again, taking in the Grand Canyon, the Pinnacle Lookout and the rugged peaks of Mount Rosea.
